The high quality breast screening programme in this country is recognised as being one of the most effective in the world. This is a reputation of which we are rightly proud and one that reflects the dedication of those involved in the programme, the significance of past achievements and our ambitions for the future.
The features in this annual review reflect activity in England, but for the statistics we are delighted that our colleagues in Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland join us to present UK data. These statistics present a picture of a constantly improving programme and one that is already seeing the impact of the expansion to women aged 65-70 as well as greater recognition of the importance of nonoperative diagnostic techniques.
