Research findings published this year recognise the huge contribution of the NHS Cervical Screening Programme to saving lives. According to the research up to 4,500 lives are saved every year in England, demonstrating the importance of regular screening in preventing cervical cancer.
The future looks bright for the programme and I have no doubt that research will play a vital role in our ongoing success. We continue to make great strides in modernising our world-class cervical screening programme.
Over the last year we began introducing a new technology, liquid based cytology (LBC), changing the way cervical samples are prepared for examination in the laboratory. This enables us to provide faster test results with a lower 'inadequate' rate, saving many women the anxiety and inconvenience of returning for a repeat smear following a test that cannot be properly read.
